At the age of 30, Zara McFarlane is one of the great jazz and soul vocalists. While her first two albums were still entirely committed to the classic soul-jazz tradition, she is now increasingly opening up to the influences of her Afro-Jamaican ancestors and, with her unique voice, creating a sound that incorporates influences from the Caribbean but also opens up to an urban jazz sound. But anyone expecting laid-back reggae rhythms is likely to be disappointed. McFarlane combines more traditional Jamaican rhythms and themes with contemporary jazz and turns her unique voice into an instrument.
With the program “Zara McFarlane – Celebrating Sarah Vaughan”, the young British artist pays tribute to jazz icon Sarah Vaughan and reinterprets her songs. Alongside Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Vaughan is considered one of the great vocalists of jazz in the early 20th century.
