The Cookers

28.06.

The musicians Cecil McBee (b), George Cables (p), Eddie Henderson (tp), Billy Hart (dr), David Weiss (tp) and Donald Harrison (sax) are “The Cookers”. McBee, Cables, Henderson and Hart are firmly rooted in the hard bop of the 1960s, that golden age of modern jazz. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s “Mwandishi Group”, which caused a sensation at the end of the 1960s. Cecil McBee was a member of Charles Lloyd’s “’60s Quartet” together with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. George Cables played piano for jazz stars such as Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. And Donald Harrison also played with the greats of jazz: Art Blakey, Miles Davis and Ron Carter were his stage partners. Finally, David Weiss played with greats such as Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.

They are now legends in their own right and “The Cookers” can rightly be considered an all-star formation. Founded in New York City in 2007, the band has kept the hard bop of the 1960s and 1970s alive at the highest level to this day. The vast experience of the seven musicians creates a progressive postbop style that is second to none, or as the New York Times put it: “A dream team of future-oriented hard bop”.
