It is still little known today that the first European jazz style was developed by Sinti and Roma. Django Reinhardt, who was descended from French Sinti, skillfully mixed the music of the French Sinti (“Manouches”) with stylistic elements of jazz.
Marcel Loeffler comes from Alsace and is very much in the tradition of Manouches jazz. With his quartet, the accordionist plays a lively jazz that takes up the melodies of the Manouches, but is also reminiscent of Parisian melodies and combines them with modern jazz. You can hear the wild Parisian nights of the 1950s and 1960s with Boris Vian and Juliette Gréco, the carefree France of chansonnier Charles Trénet and the laments of Georges Brassens and Marcel Mouloudji paired with the passionate improvisations of the fabulous Marcel Loeffler.
