Antonio Lizana

Nuevo Flamenco meets Jazz

The musical mother tongue of 39-year-old Antonio Lizana is Nuevo Flamenco. But the Andalusian would not have been able to establish himself as a globally acclaimed creative force and star of the new interpretation of flamenco if he had followed only his artistic mentors. As a saxophonist, singer, composer and bandleader, Lizana condenses the intertwining perspectives of jazz and nuevo flamenco, which for him are completely natural, into a profound, soulful statement. His music is passionate, progressive and deeply liberal and modern in character.

In his latest album, Lizana offers us nine compositions that reveal the soundscapes of his childhood and the beauty of his hometown, Cádiz. Lizana is a unique artist: a true flamenco singer and a talented saxophonist, with an Andalusian heart and the improvisational soul of a jazz musician.

Yellowjackets

Legends of Jazz

The Yellowjackets are undoubtedly legends of jazz. The band led by Russell Ferrante (keyboards) has been around since 1978 and was initially mainly committed to R&B. When guitarist Robben Ford left and saxophonist Marc Russo joined, the quartet began playing light-footed fusion jazz with catchy melodies. When saxophonist Bobby Mintzer joined the band in 1990, that changed and ‘serious’ jazz became the dominant style in the Yellowjackets’ music.

The live album ‘Live Wires’, released in 1991, already pointed the way: complex rhythms, rousing melodies and a sound inspired by modern jazz became the secret of the band’s success. By the time the album ‘Mini Jam’ was released in 2002, the critics had fallen silent and the Yellowjackets are now considered grand masters of contemporary fusion jazz. What has remained is their joy of playing, their enthusiasm for improvisation and the influence of different musical styles. The best proof of this is their current album ‘Fasten Up’.
