Sensual jazz between East and West
Dhafer Youssef is one of the stars of contemporary jazz. His work is characterised by influences from American jazz, a deep connection to Arabic music, oriental influences and a love of Indian music.
Dhafer Youssef is rooted in the Arabic music and singing tradition of his North African homeland Tunisia.
From all these influences, his extraordinary voice and the warm sounds of the Arabic oud, Youssef creates sensual melodies and complex rhythmic structures of often enchanting beauty. With his driving beats and his openness to electronic sounds, he has also made his music attractive to a young audience. Youssef is also a master of improvisation and turns every concert into something unique and extraordinary.
His latest album ‘Street of Minarets’ brings together some legends of jazz, including Herbie Hancock at the piano, Marcus Miller on bass, Nguyên Lê on the guitar, Dave Holland on double bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. Youssef tailored the compositions entirely to his fellow musicians and only composed once they were finalised. Like Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller was also was also involved in several albums by Miles Davis which have deeply inspired Dhafer. Youssef draws inspiration from their experiences and musicality and adds his own musical signature to their contributions.
